What's in the Name?

Two Meanings, One Mission

One Stick, Two Stick refers to the crochet hook or knitting needles you will use to create our designs. But there is more to our name than meets the eye. It was inspired by an ancient African parable about building community.

In the story, a village elder is dying. After gathering his people around him, he asks each of them to pick up a stick.

“Now break your stick,” he instructs. They each easily snap their sticks in two.

Next, he asks each of them to gather two sticks and hold them in their hands side-by-side.

“Now break them,” he says.

No one can.

“Remember this after I die,” he explains. “Alone our souls are easily broken, but standing together, we are unbreakable.”

Together, we are stronger. This is the vision behind One Stick, Two Stick. That’s why each of our kits comes with an element that is meant to be shared: give a bracelet to a friend, donate a hat to a charity or teach a friend how to knit.

Each kit includes donation information on our charity partners. If you’re more apt to share with a friend, each kit has gift cards to make the giving a little more personal.
